Meet the Original Sisterchick —
Robin Jones Gunn
By Susan E. Richardson
(written for Jackson Christian Family Magazine)
What kind of person comes up with the idea of
putting two middle-aged women on a plane for Finland without any solid plans
for when they get there? Or condemns another to a surprise pregnancy before a
Hawaiian vacation? Someone like Robin Jones Gunn, who tried one of those
herself and loves a good adventure.
Robin's writing reflects her life in many ways. When
her two children were younger, she wrote picture books and first chapter books,
sharing lessons she wanted to teach them with other children. Being part of her
husband's youth ministry led her to write her best selling Christy Miller and
Sierra Jensen series for teen girls, responding to the need for quality
Christian fiction they would enjoy.
As Robin's audience matured, so did her writing. The
Glenbrooke
series introduced romance to her repertoire. She finished Christy
Miller's story in a three-book trilogy,
Christy and Todd: the College Years.
She also wrote non-fiction, sharing her heart with her readers through
Mothering by Heart,
Tea at Glenbrooke,
and Gentle Passages. With older
family-based characters, the new Sisterchicks® series takes her work
to a new audience.
Robin's heart is evident in her work. Read any of
her books and you'll find the same warmth and enthusiasm she exudes in person.
Her preferences and experiences show up, too. Nowhere is this more obvious than
in Sisterchicks on the Loose, the first book in the series, which grew
out of a trip with a good friend. She took a little creative license to
transform the experience into Sharon and Penny's, but it defined the perfect
Sisterchicks® event for her. To qualify, it must be spontaneous and
involve two women who instantly bond at the heart.
In any of her work, you'll find her basic philosophy
reflected. If Robin could say one thing to her readers it would be to be
authentic. "When we speak the truth it sets us free. When we're authentic it
frees other people to be authentic, too." Robin's work mirrors the genuineness
of her own life.
With the Sisterchicks® books, she's found
a formula that resonates with readers. The books reflect her zest with their
light-hearted tone, but also include believable relationships, a well-integrated
message, and an over-arching awareness of God's plan and purpose in all things.
Finishing one leaves you longing to know more of God and to share Him with your
own Sisterchicks®.
Two of Robin's other favorites appear regularly in
her books: tea and chocolate. No Sisterchicks® event would be
complete without chocolate of some kind. While she prefers dark chocolate,
toward the bittersweet side, any kind will work.
